What is a Class B Permit?
If a Tanzanian company hires you to work in Tanzania, you will need a Class B Residence Permit. It works together with your Work Permit from the Ministry of Labor. Basically, the Work Permit allows you to take up employment, while the Residence Permit lets you live legally in the country during your contract.
What Your Employer Needs to Show
Before the Ministry of Labor approves your permit, your employer has to show that the job needs specialized experience that is hard to find locally. The law also requires your company to pair you with a local Tanzanian staff member (an understudy) so you can share your knowledge with them while you work here.
Practical Tip:
Make sure your employer has their company tax clearance certificate from TRA ready before starting your application. Missing tax papers are the most common cause of permit delays.
Documents You Will Need
Here is what you will need to prepare before applying online:
- Your passport (valid for at least 6 months).
- Certified copies of your university degrees and certificates.
- A clean police record check from your home country.
- Your signed employment contract and detailed job summary.
- Your employer's company registration (BRELA certificate) and TRA Tax Clearance.
Timelines and Government Fees
Getting your permit approved usually takes 3 to 6 weeks. The official government fee for a Class B Residence Permit is $500 USD, plus a $100 USD work permit application fee. The permit is usually valid for up to 2 years and can be renewed.
Bringing Your Family (Class C Permits)
Your spouse and children under 18 can move with you under Class C Dependent Permits. Keep in mind that a dependent permit lets your family live and study in Tanzania, but your spouse cannot work for a company in Tanzania unless they get their own independent work permit.
